TROOP A NEWS RELEASE September 27, 2018 Pedestrian Succumbs to Injuries Received in EBR Parish Crash Baton Rouge – Shortly before 1:00 am on September 23, 2018, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a serious injury crash involving a pedestrian on LA Hwy 30 north of Ben Hur Rd. in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash ultimately resulted in the death of 19-year-old Blake M. Cordes of Mandeville. The preliminary investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Cordes was walking southbound on the east shoulder of LA Hwy 30. At the same time, 35-year-old Crystal Tucker of Baton Rouge was driving a 2015 Hyundai Tucson northbound on LA Hwy 30. For unknown reasons Cordes stepped off of the shoulder and into the northbound lane of travel. As a result he was struck by the northbound Hyundai. Cordes sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash. He was transported from the scene to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge where he later succumbed to those injuries. He was pronounced deceased by OLOL medical personnel on September 26th, 2018. Tucker was properly restrained at the time of the crash and was uninjured. Impairment on her part was not suspected, and per standard procedure submitted to chemical test for intoxication, the results of which were negative. Impairment on the part of Cordes is unknown at this time, but a toxicology sample was obtained from him and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis, the results of which are pending.
