Driver Killed After Pulling Into Path of Charter Bus In Caldwell Parish

On August 10, 2014, at 7:37 p.m., Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a two vehicle fatal crash on U.S. Highway 165 four miles south of Columbia that left a Grayson man dead.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2002 Dodge truck, driven by 86-year-old Ted Coleman of Grayson, was attempting to enter U.S. 165 from a driveway when it pulled into the path of a 2007 MCI Charter bus, driven by 61-year-old Marion McBride of Hermitage, Tennessee, that was traveling south on U.S. 165.

Coleman was not wearing his seat belt, suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to a hospital in Columbia where he died. The two passengers in the Dodge, 53-year-old Sherry Waldrop of Columbia and 45-year-old Yvonne Burtz of Kelly, were not wearing their seat belts, suffered moderate injuries and were taken to a hospital in Columbia. McBride did not report any injuries.

Impairment on the part of Coleman is unknown. Impairment on the part of McBride is not suspected. Toxicology samples were taken and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

While the cause of this crash remains under investigation, Troopers remind drivers that distractions inside or outside of the vehicle remain factors in crashes. Distracted driving is any activity which diverts a driver’s attention away from the primary task of driving. Distractions include texting, eating or drinking, talking to passengers or even using a navigation system. By reducing distractions drivers can reduce the risk of being involved in a crash.

Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash

Troop F has investigated 22 fatal crashes which have resulted in 22 deaths so far this year.
