TROOP F NEWS RELEASE
December 27, 2013
Serious Injury Motorcycle Crash In Morehouse Parish
On December 26, 2013, at 3:20 p.m., Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a two vehicle serious injury crash on Louisiana Highway 139 north of Louisiana Highway 554.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2008 Suzuki GSX motorcycle, driven by 28-year-old Derrick Harper of Bastrop, was traveling south on Louisiana Highway 139 when it struck a 2012 Toyota Highlander, driven by 55-year-old Elizabeth Nelson of Bastrop, that was also traveling south on Louisiana Highway 139. The Toyota was making a left turn onto a private drive when the Suzuki attempted to pass it in a no passing zone.

Harper was wearing a US D.O.T. approved helmet. Harper suffered serious injuries and was taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe. Nelson was wearing her seat belt. Nelson suffered moderate injuries and was taken to St. Francis Medical Center.

Alcohol use is not suspected. Toxicology samples were taken and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Although not all crashes are survivable, properly utilizing safety equipment like approved motorcycle helmets and seatbelts decrease your risk of serious injury or death tremendously. Troopers urge motorcyclists of all ages and experience levels to take extra precautions while riding and ensure that they are properly prepared. Through participation in certified training programs, riders are educated on safe riding practices such as being visible, dressing for safety, applying effective riding strategies, and knowing the capabilities and limitations of their bike. Motorcyclists are taught how to apply these safety practices to not only avoid being involved in a crash but to greatly reduce the chance of injury should a crash occur.
