TROOP F NEWS RELEASE
March 4, 2014
Three Vehicle Fatal Crash in Richland Parish
On March 4, 2014, at 1:30 p.m., Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a three vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 20 west of U.S. Highway 425 that claimed the life of a Monroe man.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2012 Toyota truck, driven by 57-year-old Thomas Gilmer of Monroe, was traveling east on Interstate 20 in the left lane when for unknown reasons it lost control and side swiped a 2008 Ford truck, driven by 56-year-old Johnny Wiley of Winnsboro, that was traveling east on Interstate 20 in the right lane. The Toyota then continued off the left side of the road, through the median and into the westbound lanes of Interstate 20 where it struck a 1999 International 18-wheeler, driven by 53-year-old Marvin Gerbrand of North Newton, Kansas, head on.

Gilmer was wearing his seat belt. Gilmer suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Richland Parish Coroner’s Office. Gerbrand was wearing his seat belt and did not report any injuries. Wiley was wearing his seat belt. Wiley reported minor injuries and was transported to St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe.

Impairment on the parts of Wiley and Gerbrand is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Impairment on the part of Gilmer is unknown. Toxicology samples were taken and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, Troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving. Never drive a motor vehicle when impaired or fatigued. Always remain buckled up while in a vehicle, regardless of seating position. Avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver’s attention away from the road and always obey the speed limit.

Troop F has investigated 4 fatal crashes which have resulted in 4 deaths so far this year.
