Unrestrained 9 Year Old Dies in Two Vehicle Crash in East Baton Rouge Parish

Baton Rouge, LA – Shortly before 11:00 am on March 12, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatality crash on LA 42 (Highland Rd.) east of LA 3246 (Siegen Ln.) in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash took the life of 9 year old Fernando Menendez of Baton Rouge, LA.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 32 year old Elmer Menendez of Baton Rouge, LA was traveling eastbound on LA 42 in a 1992 Mazda B22 pickup. At the same time, 46 year old Ron Adams of Baton Rouge, LA was traveling westbound on LA 42 in a 2001 GMC Yukon. For unknown reasons, Menendez lost control of his vehicle and it began to rotate counterclockwise. Menendez’s vehicle crossed the center line into the path of Adams’ vehicle. Adams’s vehicle struck Menendez’s vehicle on the right side.

9 year old Fernando Menendez was unrestrained and ejected from the front seat of the vehicle. He sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office. Elmer Menendez was not restrained and was also ejected from the vehicle. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Adams was properly restrained and received moderate injuries.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash but a toxicology sample will be taken from both drivers for analysis. Upon his release from the hospital, Menendez will be booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail for Negligent Injuring, Careless Operation, No Seat Belt, and No Child Restraint.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
