TROOP F NEWS RELEASE November 12, 2013
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe, driven by 23-year-old Allen Atkinson of Grayson, was traveling north on US Highway 165 when for unknown reasons it crossed the median and struck a 2014 Toyota Camry, driven by 55-year-old Bertha Griffin of Columbia, that was traveling south on US Highway 165. Atkinson and the passenger in the Hyundai, 21-year-old Seth Shipp of Columbia, suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and were pronounced dead at the scene by the Caldwell Parish Coroner’s Office. Bertha Griffin suffered serious injuries and was transported to Citizens Medical Center in Columbia where she died. The passenger in the Toyota, 60-year-old Donald Griffin, suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Caldwell Parish Coroner’s Office. All four people were wearing their seat belts. Alcohol use is unknown. Toxicology samples were taken and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, Troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving. Never drive a motor vehicle when impaired or fatigued. Always remain buckled up while in a vehicle, regardless of seating position. Avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver’s attention away from the road and always obey the speed limit. Troop F has investigated 39 fatal crashes which have resulted in 47 deaths so far this year.
