TROOP F NEWS RELEASE June 9, 2014
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2003 Nissan Maxima, driven by 23-year-old De Marvin Miller of Farmerville, was traveling south on Louisiana Highway 549 when for unknown reasons it crossed the center line and struck a 2008 GMC truck, driven by 32-year-old Agustin Martinez of Marion, that was traveling north on Louisiana Highway 549 head on. Martinez was wearing his seat belt, reported minor injuries and was transported to Union General Hospital. Miller suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Union Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash. Toxicology samples were taken and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. While the cause of this crash remains under investigation, Troopers remind drivers that distractions inside or outside of the vehicle remain factors in crashes. Distracted driving is any activity which diverts a driver’s attention away from the primary task of driving. Distractions include texting, eating or drinking, talking to passengers or even using a navigation system. By reducing distractions drivers can reduce the risk of being involved in a crash. Troop F has investigated 13 fatal crashes which have resulted in 13 deaths so far this year.
