Head-On Crash Claims the Life of Unrestrained West Monroe Man

West Monroe, LA– Last night, a head-on crash in Ouachita Parish claimed the life of an unrestrained West Monroe man.

Shortly after 2:00 a.m., on Saturday April 15, 2017, Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a head-on crash involving two vehicles on LA 616 near Caldwell Road. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2004 Mazda pick-up truck, driven by 73-year-old Bracie Smith of West Monroe, LA, was traveling east on LA 616 when the vehicle he was driving crossed the center line and collided with a westbound 2006 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 72-year-old Danny Johnson of Downsville, LA.

Smith, who was not restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ouachita Parish Coroner’s Office. Johnson was taken to a local hospital with injuries.

Routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana law requires motor vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in every seating position, day and night. Wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the likelihood of being seriously injured or killed as the result of a crash and is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves

Motorists are encouraged to always make the smart choice and wear their seatbelt. This crash serves as yet another tragic reminder of how important this decision can be.

In 2017, Troop F has investigated 11 fatal crashes resulting in 11 deaths.
