TROOP F NEWS RELEASE March 3, 2017 Unrestrained Oak Grove Man Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash Goodwill, LA—An unrestrained man lost his life this morning after the vehicle he was driving ran off the road and began overturning. Shortly after 6:15 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 585 south of Goodwill, LA, in West Carroll Parish. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2006 Hummer H3, driven by 58-year-old Randy Abernathy of Oak Grove, LA, was traveling westbound on LA Hwy 585. For unknown reasons, the vehicle traveled off the right side of the road and entered a ditch. After entering the ditch the vehicle began overturning. Abernathy became trapped inside the vehicle as it was overturning. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the West Carroll Parish Coroner’s Office. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash. In 2017, Troop F has investigated 6 fatal crashes resulting in 6 deaths.
