TROOP F NEWS RELEASE January 23, 2017 Teenager Dies in Tensas Parish Crash Newellton, LA—A teenager lost her life earlier today after the vehicle she was driving traveled off the road and overturned. Shortly after 9:45 a.m. on January 23, 2017, Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 605, approximately 1 mile south of town of Newellton. This crash took the life of 18-year-old Lera South of Newellton, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed South was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu north on LA 605. As the vehicle was traveling around a left hand curve, the driver failed to negotiate the curve, ran off the road, and the car began to overturn. South, who was properly restrained, was taken to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead. A toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. In 2017, Troop F has investigated 2 fatal crashes resulting in 2 deaths.
