TROOP F NEWS RELEASE November 4, 2017 Unrestrained Texas Man Dies in Madison Parish Crash Tallulah – An unrestrained man lost his life this afternoon after the vehicle he was driving traveled off the road and struck a large tree. Shortly after 2:15 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single-vehicle crash on US Highway 80 approximately 4 miles east of Tallulah. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2008 Nissan XTerra, driven by 68-year-old Hoyt McKnight of Sugar Land, TX, was traveling west on US 80 when the vehicle he was driving traveled off the left side of the road and struck a large tree. McKnight, who was not restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Madison Parish Coroner’s Office. A toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash. In 2017, Troop F has investigated 29 fatal crashes resulting in 30 deaths.
