TROOP F NEWS RELEASE August 18, 2017 Driver Dies in Single Vehicle Crash in Ouachita Parish Swartz – A Bastrop man has died after the vehicle he was driving traveled off the road and struck a tree. Shortly after 6:10 p.m. on Thursday, August 17, 2017, Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Hwy 139 just south of the Morehouse Parish line. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2005 Acura TL driven by 67-year-old Gerald Davis of Bastrop was traveling north on LA Hwy 139 when it traveled off the right side of the road. Davis overcorrected, traveled across both lanes, and struck a large tree. Troopers believe that Davis was restrained, but due to the severe forces of the crash he was ejected from the vehicle. Davis was transported to Morehouse General Hospital with critical injuries. He later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by hospital staff. A toxicology sample was obtained from Davis and will be submitted for analysis. Excessive speed may have been a factor, and this crash remains under investigation. In 2017, Troop F has investigated 20 fatal crashes resulting in 20 deaths.
