Bicyclist Killed in Ascension Parish Crash

St Amant – Shortly before 2:30 pm on February 23, 2020, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a fatal crash involving a bicyclist on LA Hwy 935 west of LA Hwy 431 in Ascension Parish. The crash claimed the life of 52-year-old Derrell Morris of St Amant.

The initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as Morris was riding his bicycle westbound in the eastbound lane of LA Hwy 935. At the same time, a 2000 Dodge Ram was traveling eastbound on LA Hwy 935. For reasons still under investigation, the Dodge and the bicycle collided head-on.

Morris suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased on the scene. Impairment is suspected on the part of Morris. A toxicology sample was obtained from him and submitted for analysis. The driver of the Dodge was properly restrained and was not injured. She was given a chemical breath test and showed no signs of impairment. This crash remains under investigation and charges may be pending.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind bicyclists to never assume that a motorist can see you. Simple precautions such as wearing an approved bicycle helmet, reflective materials, and avoiding distractions are key to preventing crashes and avoiding injuries. Louisiana law requires bicyclists to remain as close to the right of side of the roadway as practicable and obey all traffic laws.
