Unrestrained Mississippi Woman Killed in Lincoln Parish Crash

Simsboro, LA- A Mississippi woman died last night after the vehicle she was driving side-swiped another vehicle on Interstate 20.

Shortly after 7:20 p.m., Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 20 at milepost 74, approximately 3 miles west of Simsboro.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2006 Kia Rio, driven by 29-year-old Noura Makki of Clinton, MS was traveling west on Interstate 20. The vehicle Makki was driving crossed the center line and side-swiped a 2013 Toyota Camry, driven by 35-year-old Courtney Swartz of Breham, TX. After impact, both vehicles entered the median and the Kia began to rollover.

Makki and a passenger in the vehicle were not restrained and both were ejected. Makki was pronounced dead at the scene and the passenger was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Swartz, who was properly restrained, was also transported to a local hospital with minor injuries

A toxicology sample was obtained and submitted for analysis. This crash is still under investigation.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Wearing a seatbelt greatly reduces the chances of receiving serious injuries in a crash as well. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle to always remain buckled up, regardless of seating position.
