Unrestrained Woman Killed in Afternoon Crash

Oak Ridge, LA – A woman from Oak Ridge died this afternoon after losing control of her vehicle and traveling into the path of an 18-wheeler in Morehouse Parish.

Shortly after 1:00 p.m., on September 4, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred on Louisiana Highway 3051 just east of Louisiana Highway 138. This crash took the life of 66-year-old Vickie Mayweather of Oak Ridge, LA.

The preliminary investigation by State Police revealed Mayweather was driving a 2002 Mercury Marquis west on LA 3051. A Peterbuilt 18-wheeler, driven by 59-year-old Gary Bridges of Crossett, AR, was traveling east on LA 3051. For unknown reasons, Mayweather lost control of her vehicle and ran off the right side of the roadway. After running off the road, Mayweather’s vehicle traveled back onto the roadway, crossed over the center line and impacted the side of the 18-wheeler.

Mayweather, who was not restrained, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle, who was also unrestrained, was seriously injured and taken to local hospital. Bridges was wearing a seat belt was not injured during this crash.

A toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana law requires vehicle occupants to be restrained in all seating positions, day and night. Wearing a seat belt on every trip, whether it’s short or long, is the most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves in the event of a crash. Motorists are encouraged to always make the smart choice by wearing their seat belt.

In 2015, Troop F has investigated 35 fatal crashes resulting in 37 deaths.
