Unrestrained Driver Dies in Caldwell Parish Crash

Columbia, LA—A man lost his life this morning after traveling off the road and striking several trees.

Shortly before 5:30 a.m. on July 14, 2016, Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 4, approximately 5 miles west of Columbia, LA. This crash took the life of 18-year-old James Franklin Jr. of Columbia, LA.

The initial investigation revealed Franklin was driving a 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass east on LA Hwy 4. For unknown reasons, the vehicle traveled off the right side of the road and then the driver overcorrected. The vehicle then traveled across both lanes and off the roadway, striking several large trees.

Franklin, who was not properly restrained, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene by the Caldwell Parish Coroner’s Office.

Routine toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

In 2016, Troop F has investigated 21 fatal crashes resulting in 22 deaths.
