TROOP F NEWS RELEASE July 1, 2016 Marion Man Killed in Union Parish Crash Spearsville, LA—A man lost his life this morning after traveling off the road and striking a tree. Shortly before 10:10 a.m. on July 1, 2016, Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 588 approximately 4 miles north of Louisiana Highway 15. This crash took the life of 50-year-old Michael Gilliam of Marion, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed Gilliam was driving a 2003 GMC Sierra north on LA 588. For unknown reasons, the vehicle traveled across the southbound lane of travel and off the roadway. After traveling off the road, the vehicle struck a large tree and came to final rest. Gilliam, who was properly restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Union Parish Coroner’s Office. A passenger in the vehicle was also taken to a local hospital with injuries. A routine toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. In 2016, Troop F has investigated 18 fatal crashes resulting in 19 deaths.
