TROOP F NEWS RELEASE June 19, 2016 Head-On Crash Claims the Life of Monroe Man Monroe, LA – Late last night, one person lost his life due to a vehicle traveling the wrong way on US Highway 165. Shortly after 2:00 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred on US Hwy 165 approximately 4 miles south of the town of Monroe. The initial investigation revealed a 1997 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by 39-year-old Antonio McClure of Monroe, LA, was traveling north on US Hwy 165 in the southbound lanes of travel. A 2008 Toyota 4Runner, driven by 42-year-old Tonya Smith of Kelly, LA was traveling south on US 165 when it was struck head-on by the vehicle driven by McClure. McClure, who was properly restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ouachita Parish Coroner’s Office. Smith was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. Impairment is a suspected factor in this crash. Toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death. In 2016, Troop F has investigated 17 fatal crashes resulting in 18 deaths.
