| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: July 17, 2011 Alcohol Suspected In Deadly Crash Earlier this evening, a single vehicle crash killed a woman from Leesville and injured a man. Troopers responded to the crash around 6:00 pm, which occurred on LA Hwy 8 west of Leesville, LA in Vernon Parish. The crash involved a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by A. J. Turner (W/M 59 yrs) of Leesville, LA. The Chevrolet was east bound on LA Hwy 8 when Turner lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with several trees and overturned. Turner was not wearing his seatbelt and is suspected of drinking alcohol. He was transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport for treatment. His only passenger, identified as Laverne S. Powell (W/F 78 yrs), was not wearing her seatbelt and was pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests and charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Motorists must be reminded that alcohol has many effects on the body. Alcohol can impair visual ability, alter sense of time and space, impair fine motor skills needed to operate a motor vehicle, and decrease reaction times. Just one drink may cause these effects. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seatbelt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask for you to take one second to “buckle up!” Troop E troopers have investigated 33 fatal crashes for the year of 2011, resulting in 34 fatalities.
