Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: July 25, 2011 Unrestrained Driver Killed In Vernon Parish Crash Late Saturday night, a single vehicle crash killed one man and seriously injured another. Troopers responded to the crash around 11:00 pm, which occurred on LA Hwy 8 west of LA Hwy 464. The crash involved a 2001 Volvo, driven by Bryan M. Neal (W/M 22 yrs) of Fort Polk, LA. The Volvo was east bound on LA Hwy 8 when Neal lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, Neal overcorrected the vehicle and exited the left side of the roadway before colliding with a tree and overturning. After overturning, the vehicle became engulfed in flames. Neal was not wearing his seatbelt and was partially ejected. He was pronounced dead. His only passenger, identified as Dustin A. Stewart (W/M 21 yrs) of Fort Polk, was wearing his seatbelt and received serious injuries. Stewart was removed from the vehicle by passing motorist and transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seatbelt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask for you to take one second to “buckle up!” Troop E troopers have investigated 34 fatal crashes for the year of 2011, resulting in 36 fatalities.
