Grant Parish Fatal Crash

Earlier today, a crash involving three vehicles killed an elderly woman from Pollock, LA.

Troopers responded to the crash around 11:15 am, which occurred on US Hwy 165 at Airbase Road. The crash involved a 1997 Ford Escort, driven by Jessie J. Carpenter (W/F 94 yrs) of Pollock, LA, a 2003 Chevrolet pickup, driven by Donald Chandler Boyd (W/M 76 yrs) of Pollock, LA, and a 2009 Bluebird bus, driven by Mary S. Jordon (W/F 74 yrs) of Tallulah, LA. Prior to the collision, the Ford turned left from Airbase Road onto US Hwy 165 into the inside south bound lane. This action caused the south bound Chevrolet, which was traveling in the inside lane, to collide head on with the Ford. After this collision, the Chevrolet collided with the Bluebird, which was south bound in the outside lane of US Hwy 165.

Carpenter was wearing her seatbelt, but was pronounced dead.

Boyd was wearing his seatbelt and received moderate injuries. He was transported to Cabrini Hospital for treatment.

Jordon was wearing her seatbelt and was not injured.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Age does not reflect driving ability. As a group, older adults are among the safest on the road. They tend to wear their seatbelt more often, obey the speed limit and avoid drinking and driving more than other age groups. Nevertheless, older adults are more likely to be injured or killed in a vehicle crash. Safe driving requires the complex coordination of many skills. Although few individuals associate 40-year-old adults with aging, this is when subtle changes in vision, hearing, fitness and concentration can begin. These changes may affect driving proficiency. By themselves, none of the above changes automatically indicate that an individual should stop driving. They do require paying more attention to driving safety, staying alert to changing capabilities and seeking the advice of a qualified physician (https://www.usaaedfoundation.org).

Troop E troopers have investigated 29 fatal crashes for the year of 2011, resulting in 30 fatalities.
