TROOP E - NEWS RELEASE
October 1, 2011
Motorcyclist Killed In Avoyelles Parish Crash Earlier today, a single vehicle crash killed a man from Moreauville, LA.
Troopers responded to the crash around 1:00 pm, which occurred on LA Hwy 451 in Bordelonville, LA. The crash involved a 2005 Kawasaki motorcycle, driven by Larry Martin (W/M 62 yrs). The Kawasaki was north bound on LA Hwy 451 when Martin lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with an embankment of a levee road.
Martin was not wearing a helmet and was ejected. He was pronounced dead.
Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that helmets saved the lives of 1,829 motorcyclists in 2008. If all motorcyclists had worn helmets, an additional 823 lives could have been saved. Helmets are estimated to be 37-percent effective in preventing fatal injuries to motorcycle riders and 41-percent for motorcycle passengers. This means for every 100 motorcycle riders killed in crashes while not wearing a helmet, 37 of them could have been saved had all 100 worn helmets (NHTSA 2011).
Troop E troopers have investigated 56 fatal crashes for the year of 2011, resulting in 60 fatalities.
