TROOP E - NEWS RELEASE

Winn Parish Fatal Crash Earlier today, a crash involving three vehicles killed a woman and seriously injured another.
Troopers responded to the crash around 7:15 am, which occurred on US Hwy 84 west of Winnfield, LA. The crash involved a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Heather L. Johns (W/F 25 yrs) of Winnfield, a 2005 Pontiac Grand Am, driven by Karen H. Speights (W/F 42 yrs) of Stonewall, LA, and a 2010 Toyota Matrix, driven by Percy D. Hogan Jr. (W/M 53 yrs) of Calhoun, LA. The Chevrolet was east bound on US Hwy 84 when Johns crossed the centerline and collided with the west bound Pontiac. The Toyota, which was west bound, was unable to avoid the Chevrolet and the Pontiac and collided with both vehicles after the initial collision.
Johns was not wearing her seatbelt and received serious injuries. She was transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, LA for treatment.
Speights was not wearing her seatbelt and was pronounced dead.
Hogan Jr. was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured.
Routine toxicology tests and charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seatbelt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!”
Troop E troopers have investigated 51 fatal crashes for the year of 2011, resulting in 54 fatalities.
