| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: October 18, 2010 Louisiana State Police Troop E To Participate In National Teen Driver Safety Week Area motorists hitting the road on October 17-23, 2010 should wear their seat belts or be ready to face the consequences. That is the message Louisiana State Police Troop E will be sending, as they buckle down on all motorists not buckling up, especially teens. From 2003 to 2008 in Louisiana, 73% of teen passenger vehicle occupants, ages 16-20, killed in motor vehicle crashes were not buckled up at the time of the fatal crash. Had all these teens been wearing their seat belts, as many as half of them would have survived. In 2008, 64% of the passenger vehicle occupants ages 13 to 15 and 21 to 34 killed in traffic crashes were not using restraints. These age groups had the highest percentage out of all age groups. Research has shown that lap/shoulder seatbelts, when used, reduce the risk of fatal injury to front seat passenger car occupants by 45% and the risk of moderate/critical injury by 50%. Ejection from the vehicle is one of the most injurious events that can happen to a person in a crash. In fatal crashes in 2008, 77% of passenger vehicle occupants who were totally ejected from the vehicle were killed. That is why in an effort to save more lives, Louisiana State Police Troop E is stepping up seat belt enforcement. As part of this effort, Troopers will patrol school zones and other locations in the Troop E area looking for people, especially teens, who choose not to wear their seat belt. Troopers will also focus their attention on impaired driving and distracted driving as well. Distraction in the vehicle, such as cell phones, texting, and passengers, can lead to serious and sometimes fatal crashes. Louisiana law requires all passengers, regardless of seating position, to be properly restrained when driving or riding in a vehicle.
