Colfax Child Killed In Grant Parish Crash Earlier today, a single vehicle crash killed a child and injured a man, both from Colfax, LA.
Troopers responded to the crash around 11:50 a.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 492 near LA Hwy 8. The crash involved a 1993 Chevrolet pickup, driven by Michael W. Sykes (B/M 54 yrs). The Chevrolet was eastbound on LA Hwy 492 when Sykes lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle impacted an entrance to a private driveway before traveling through a ditch and impacting a second driveway. The vehicle then began overturning, after impacting the second driveway.
Michael W. Sykes was wearing his seatbelt and received moderate injuries. He was transported to Rapides Regional Medical Center. His only passenger, identified as Michael T. Sykes (B/M 12 yrs), was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected. He was pronounced dead.
Routine toxicology tests and charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seatbelt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!”
Troop E Troopers have investigated 60 fatal crashes in 2012, resulting in 65 fatalities.
