Elderly Pedestrian Killed In Vernon Parish Crash Early this morning, a crash involving a single vehicle and a pedestrian killed a man from Hornbeck, LA.
Troopers responded to the crash around 5:08 a.m., which occurred on US Hwy 171 at Holly Grove Road. The crash involved a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by Geneva Maynard Smith (W/F 40 yrs) of Anacoco, LA and a pedestrian, identified as Robert Edward Michalk (W/M 84 yrs) of Hornbeck. The Volkswagen was southbound on US Hwy 171 when it collided with Michalk. Michalk was walking in the middle of the outside lane of US Hwy 171 when the collision occurred.
Smith was wearing her seatbelt and was not injured.
Michalk was pronounced dead.
Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
When walking near a roadway, always make yourself visible to drivers by wearing bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials. Pedestrians that are walking at night should try to carry a flashlight for added safety. A person should always walk on a sidewalk, but if there is not a sidewalk available, you should always walk on the shoulder or if no shoulder is available, as close to the roadway edge facing traffic.
