TROOP E NEWS RELEASE

June 24, 2013
Retired Trooper/Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Killed In Crash

Vernon Parish – Early this morning, a single vehicle crash killed one of our own. Retired Louisiana State Police Trooper and current Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Steven G. Netherland was on duty when his vehicle tragically crashed.

Troopers responded to the crash around 7:00 a.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 8 east of Calcasieu Loop. The crash involved a 2004 Ford Crown Victoria, driven by Netherland (W/M 54 yrs) of Simpson, LA. The Ford was westbound on LA Hwy 8, in a construction zone, when he lost control and crossed the centerline. After crossing the centerline, the vehicle exited the left side of the roadway before colliding with two dirt compactors and a large roadway stabilizer.

Netherland was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected. He was pronounced dead.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Netherland was a Louisiana State Trooper for over 22 years and was assigned to Troop E at the time of his retirement. He was currently working for the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy in the Civil Division and had been employed there for approximately one year. Netherland was highly respected among his fellow law enforcement colleagues, was a model Trooper and Deputy, always working hard towards our mission of public safety, and was always willing to help a person in need. Steven’s dedication, work ethic, and eagerness to help will be greatly missed.

Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seatbelt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!”

Troop E Troopers have investigated 22 fatal crashes in 2013, resulting in 22 fatalities.
