Fatal Crash In Natchitoches Parish

On March 24, 2013, at 1:18 p.m., Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a three vehicle crash on US Highway 84 east of Louisiana Highway 1226.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2007 GMC Yukon, driven by 24-year-old Lacy Ducote of Keithville, was traveling west on US Highway 84 when it crossed the center line and struck a 2012 Ford Eclipse, driven by 53-year-old Philip McClung of Natchitoches, that was traveling east on US Highway 84. The Yukon rotated clockwise and traveled onto the east shoulder where it was then struck by an eastbound 2007 Chevrolet HHR, driven by 44-year-old Julie Dukes of Leesville.

McClung suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to a hospital in Alexandria. A passenger in the Ford Eclipse, 55-year-old Melinda McClung of Natchitoches, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Natchitoches Parish Coroner’s Office. The 5-year-old passenger in the Yukon and the 15-year-old passenger in the Ford were transported to a hospital in Alexandria with non-life threatening injuries.

Alcohol use is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Toxicology samples were taken and will be submitted for analysis. Ducote was cited with careless operation. The crash remains under investigation.

Inattentive and distracted driving are leading causes of crashes in our state. Motorists should always pay attention to other traffic and drive with care. More information on distracted driving may be found online at www.distraction.gov.
