TROOP E - NEWS RELEASE April 2, 2013 Unrestrained Opelousas Man Killed In Crash Vernon Parish – Early this morning, a crash involving two vehicles killed a man from Opelousas, LA. Troopers responded to the crash around 5:30 a.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 10 east of US Hwy 171. The crash involved a 2000 International (18 wheeler), driven by Carl W. Rollins Jr. (W/M 43 yrs) of Leesville, LA and a 2007 Freightliner (18 wheeler), driven by Charles L. Theriot (W/M 56 yrs) of Carencro, LA. The Freightliner was westbound on LA Hwy 10, cresting a hilltop, when the International entered the roadway from a private drive. This action resulted in the two vehicles colliding. Rollins Jr. was not injured. He was charged with failure to yield. Theriot was not wearing his seatbelt and received moderate injuries. He was transported to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. His only passenger, identified as Earl P. Prudhomme Jr. (50 yrs), was not wearing his seatbelt and was pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seatbelt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Troop E Troopers have investigated nine fatal crashes in 2013, resulting in nine fatalities.
