Teen Seriously Injured In ATV Crash Late yesterday afternoon, a crash involving two ATVs seriously injured a teen from Zwolle, LA.
Troopers responded to the crash around 5:30 pm, which occurred on LA Hwy 3229 at Blue Lake in Sabine Parish. The crash involved a 2011 Can Am ATV, driven by a juvenile (W/M 16 yrs) of Converse, LA and a 2011 Polaris ATV, driven by a juvenile (W/M 15 yrs) of Zwolle, LA. Both ATVs were north bound on LA Hwy 3229 and were drag racing. The Can Am was traveling on the right side of the north bound lane and the Polaris was traveling on the left side of the south bound lane. The Can Am was positioned in front of the Polaris and began to turn around. This action caused the Polaris to collide with the Can Am. After impact, the Polaris exited the right side of the roadway and overturned.
The driver of the Can Am was not injured. He was not wearing a helmet.
The driver of the Polaris was ejected and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport. He was not wearing a helmet.
Alcohol is a suspected factor. Toxicology tests and charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
The public is reminded that it is dangerous and illegal to operate off-road vehicles (i.e. three-wheelers, four-wheelers, and other all-terrain vehicles) on any public roadway in this state.
Motorists must be reminded that alcohol has many effects on the body. Alcohol can impair visual ability, alter sense of time and space, impair fine motor skills needed to operate a motor vehicle, and decrease reaction times. Just one drink may cause these effects.
