Avoyelles Parish Fatal Crash Late last night, a crash involving three vehicles killed a woman from Alexandria, LA.
Troopers responded to the crash around 11:00 pm, which occurred on LA Hwy 1 south of LA Hwy 114. The crash involved a 2001 Ford pickup, driven by Lonnie R. Johnson (B/M 57 yrs) of Alexandria, LA, a 1999 Pontiac Sunfire, driven by Robert H. May (W/M 44 yrs) of Monroe, LA, and a 2010 Toyota Corolla, driven by Sagar Verma (O/M 23 yrs) of Alexandria, LA. The Ford was north bound on LA Hwy 1 and was traveling behind the Toyota. Johnson attempted to pass the Toyota in a no passing zone which resulted in the Ford colliding with the south bound Pontiac. After colliding with the Pontiac, the Ford collided with the Toyota.
Lonnie Johnson was not wearing his seatbelt and received moderate injuries. He was transported to Cabrini Hospital. His only passenger, identified as Brenda L. Johnson (B/F 54 yrs) of Alexandria, LA, was wearing her seatbelt and was pronounced dead.
May was wearing his seatbelt and received moderate injuries. He was transported to Rapides Regional Medical Center.
Sagar Verma was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured. His only passenger, identified as Nisha Verma (O/F 47 yrs) of Alexandria, LA, was wearing her seatbelt and received minor injuries. She refused medical attention.
Routine toxicology tests and charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
While not all crashes are survivable, seatbelts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and will greatly reduce the extent of injury.
Troop E troopers have investigated 30 fatal crashes in 2012, resulting in 33 fatalities.
