Fatal ATV Crash This afternoon, a crash involving an ATV and a pickup killed a man and a young boy from Deville, LA.
Troopers responded to the crash around 2:00 pm, which occurred on Hickory Grove Loop at Cotton Island Road in Rapides Parish. The crash involved a 2003 Yamaha ATV, driven by Scott A. Kelley (W/M 39 yrs) and a 2009 Ford pickup, driven by Gerald W. Huffman II (W/M 41 yrs) of Pineville, LA. The Yamaha was south bound in the north bound lane of Hickory Grove Loop. The Ford was north bound in the north bound lane of Hickory Grove Loop when Huffman steered his vehicle into the north bound ditch in an attempt to avoid the Yamaha. Kelley attempted to avoid the Ford, but over steered the ATV into the north bound ditch which resulted in the Yamaha colliding with the Ford.
Scott Kelley was pronounced dead. Devon Kelley (W/M 7 yrs) and another juvenile (W/M 11 yrs) of Ball, LA were passengers on the ATV. Devon Kelley was pronounced dead. The other juvenile received serious injuries and was transported to Rapides Regional Medical Center. Scott Kelley and the juveniles were not wearing helmets.
Huffman II was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured.
Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
The public is reminded that it is dangerous and illegal to operate off-road vehicles (i.e. three-wheelers, four-wheelers, and other all-terrain vehicles) on any public roadway in this state.
Troop E troopers have investigated 27 fatal crashes in 2012, resulting in 30 fatalities.
