TROOP E - NEWS RELEASE

April 13, 2012

Pedestrian Killed In Rapides Parish Crash

Late last night, a single vehicle crash killed a pedestrian from Deville, LA.

Troopers responded to the crash around 10:50 pm, which occurred on LA Hwy 115 in Rapides Parish. The crash involved a 2011 Ford pickup, driven by Adam M. O’Neal (W/M 29 yrs) of Deville and a pedestrian, identified as Sharon Bryant Lucas (W/F 66 yrs). The Ford was south bound on LA Hwy 115 when it collided with Lucas. Lucas was standing near the edge of the south bound lane at the time of the collision.

O’Neal initially fled the scene, but approximately one hour later reported the crash to authorities. He was not injured. Alcohol is a suspected factor. He has been charged with DWI (2nd offense), vehicular homicide, and hit and run.

Lucas was transported to Rapides Regional Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Motorists must be reminded that alcohol has many effects on the body. Alcohol can impair visual ability, alter sense of time and space, impair fine motor skills needed to operate a motor vehicle, and decrease reaction times. Just one drink may cause these effects.

Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seatbelt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!”

Troop E troopers have investigated 19 fatal crashes in 2012, resulting in 21 fatalities.
