TROOP E - NEWS RELEASE

April 17, 2012

Pursuit Ends In Apparent Suicide

Late last night, troopers from Troop E were involved in a high speed pursuit which ended with the driver shooting himself.

At approximately 10:00 pm, Shreveport Police officers were dispatched to a residence on Lawhon Street in reference to a shooting. When they arrived it was discovered Lakeisha Robinson (33 yrs) had been shot once in the torso. She was transported to LSU Medical Center in serious condition, but her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Detectives with the Shreveport Police Department immediately responded to the scene and discovered that the suspect in the shooting was O.B. Mitchell (B/M 46 yrs). According to witness statements, as well as evidence recovered at the scene of the crime, Mitchell arrived at the victim’s home and was trying to break in when she fled the residence. Mitchell chased Robinson down and shot her before fleeing in a vehicle.

Officials with the Shreveport Police Department notified other area law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for Mitchell. Shortly thereafter, Mitchell’s vehicle was spotted by DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Department on Interstate 49 heading south. When authorities tried to stop Mitchell a pursuit ensued.

During the pursuit, Mitchell appeared to be reaching under the seat for something and speeds ranged between 90 mph to 125 mph. State Police became involved in the pursuit and troopers set out spike strips in an effort to stop the fleeing 2011 Nissan Altima, but were not successful on the first attempt.

A second attempt to stop the vehicle was made, using spike strips, on I-49 near LA Hwy 119. This attempt was successful and Mitchell stopped his vehicle approximately one mile later. The vehicle stopped in the median and immediately upon stopping, Mitchell shot himself in the head.

Acadian Ambulance was called to the scene and Mitchell was pronounced dead.

The investigation remains ongoing.
