Yesterday afternoon, a crash involving a bicycle seriously injured a young teen from DeRidder, LA.

Troopers responded to the crash around 4:00 pm, which occurred on Belview Road near Crosby Loop in Vernon Parish. The crash involved a bicycle, ridden by a juvenile (W/M 14 yrs) and a 2011 GMC Yukon, driven by William Claude Coker (W/M 65 yrs) of Palmetto, FL. The bicyclist entered Belview Road, from a private driveway, and entered the path of the GMC. This action resulted in the GMC colliding with the bicycle.

The juvenile was not wearing a helmet and was seriously injured. He was transported to Byrd Hospital.

Coker was not injured.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Bicycle helmets are 85% effective in reducing total head and brain injuries. Bicycle helmets are the single most effective way to reduce fatalities due to head injuries. Failure to yield is the most common factor in bicycle fatalities with children under the age of 15. When wearing a bicycle helmet, make sure it fits snugly on your head and the clasp is locked.
