Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: October 18, 2008 Pedestrian Killed In Hit & Run Crash On Saturday, October 18, 2008, at 2:00 am, Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a fatal crash involving one vehicle and one pedestrian. The crash occurred on US Hwy 171, milepost 62.8, in Vernon Parish. This location is south of Leesville, LA. The vehicle involved is unknown at this time and fled the scene without stopping. The pedestrian’s identity is not being released at this time. As soon as notification of next of kin is made, an update will follow. The pedestrian was lying down in the outside lane of US Hwy 171 north bound when the collision occurred. Alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor with regards to the pedestrian’s actions. Troopers on the scene were given a statement by a passing motorist. The motorist informed Troopers that she observed a blue sedan pass the crash location at a high rate of speed. *Anybody with information regarding this crash is urged to contact Louisiana State Police Troop E at (318) 487-5911 or 1 (800) 256-4160. Routine toxicology tests are pending. Vernon Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of death. The crash remains under investigation. Troop E Troopers have investigated 50 fatal crashes for the year of 2008, resulting in 55 fatalities. Nine of the 50 fatal crashes have involved pedestrians. Five fatal crashes have involved an ATV and four have involved a motorcycle. Twenty-five of the 32 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Nine fatal victims were restrained.
