Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: November 10, 2008 Multi-Agency Traffic Detail In Natchitoches On Monday, November 10, 2008, between the hours of 7:30 am and 11:00 am, Louisiana State Police Troop E, Natchitoches Police Department, and Union Pacific Police Officers united to remind motorists and pedestrians of highway-rail grade safety. The traffic detail was conducted in the city of Natchitoches near Northwestern State University. During the detail, 59 citations were issued to motorists for failure to stop at the flashing red lights and/or drove around the lowered gates. One citation was issued to a pedestrian for trespassing on Union Pacific Railroad property. It is illegal for pedestrians to use the tracks as “sidewalks” or to cross at non-designated crossing zones. Ten other citations were issued for various offenses. It is critical for all motorists and pedestrians to be aware that railroad tracks are the private property of the railroad and all crossings should be treated as intersections. Always yield to an oncoming train, as they cannot stop quickly. Because of a train’s size and weight, it may take up to a mile to come to a complete stop. When approaching a highway-rail grade crossing, please remember the Operation Lifesaver motto: “Look, Listen, & Live.” During the year of 2007, Louisiana ranked eighth in the nation for highway-rail grade crossing fatalities and sixth in the nation for highway-rail grade crossing collisions. This detail was conducted in an effort to decrease these figures.
