New Orleans Man Dies In Natchitoches Parish Crash

On Thursday, September 04, 2008, at 3:34 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a fatal crash involving one vehicle. The crash occurred on I-49, milepost 156, in Natchitoches Parish.

The crash involved a 2003 Ford SUV, driven by Mr. Roy M. Smith (B/M 50 yrs) of New Orleans, LA. The Ford was south bound on I-49 when the trailer began to sway which Mr. Smith was towing. He then lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn.

Mr. Smith was ejected from the vehicle and died. He was not wearing his seatbelt.

There were six other occupants in the vehicle at the time of the crash. All the occupants in the vehicle reside in New Orleans, LA. Their names are as follows: Ms. Katherine Ward (minor injuries), Mr. Mark Arbo (moderate injuries), Ms. Janice Oxford (minor injuries), Mr. Tyronne Jefferson (minor injuries), Mr. David Johnson (not injured), and Mr. David Wimberly (not injured). Ms. Ward and Ms. Oxford were transported to Natchitoches Regional Hospital. Mr. Arbo was transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, LA. Mr. Jefferson was transported to DeSoto Regional Hospital.

Natchitoches Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of death.

Routine toxicology tests are pending.

The crash remains under investigation.

Troop E Troopers have investigated 41 fatal crashes for the year of 2008, resulting in 45 fatalities. Six of the 41 fatal crashes have involved pedestrians. Five fatal crashes have involved an ATV and two have involved a motorcycle. Twenty-three of the 28 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Six fatal victims were restrained.
