**UPDATE**Collision Between Two 18 Wheelers Results In One Death

**On Friday, September 26, 2008, at 5:15 pm, Trooper Paul Martin arrested Mr. Jerry T. Byrnes Jr. on the charges of Aggravated Obstruction of a Highway and Negligent Homicide. After further investigation, it has been determined that Mr. Byrnes Jr.’s vehicle was stopped on the roadway and not in motion. His vehicle was positioned over the crest and on the down slope of a hill. In addition, a portion of his trailer was positioned in the opposing travel lane. With regards to the position of the vehicle, Mr. Bradford did not have an avenue of escape. Trooper Martin obtained arrest warrants for the charges listed above and contacted Mr. Byrnes Jr. Mr. Byrnes Jr. surrendered to Trooper Martin and was booked into the Winn Parish Jail without incident. See below for the original news release.

On Saturday, August 16, 2008, at 8:45 am, Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a fatal crash involving two vehicles. The crash occurred on LA Hwy 472, milepost 12.5, near Big Creek Road. This location is in Winn Parish.

The crash involved a 1999 Freightliner (18 wheeler), driven by Mr. Jerry L. Bradford (W/M 58 yrs) of Dodson, LA and a 2006 Peterbilt (18 wheeler), driven by Mr. Jerry T. Byrnes Jr. (W/M 41 yrs) of Columbia, LA. Both the Freightliner and the Peterbilt were west bound on LA Hwy 472 at the time of the collision. The Freightliner was approaching a hill crest while the Peterbilt was traveling approximately 15–20 mph. The Freightliner impacted the rear portion of the Peterbilt’s trailer. This impact caused the Freightliner’s load (pulp wood) to shift forward impacting the driver’s compartment.

Mr. Bradford was pronounced dead on the scene.

Mr. Byrnes Jr. received minor injuries and was transported to Winn Medical Center for treatment.

Routine toxicology tests are pending.

Winn Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of death.

The crash remains under investigation.

Some crashes simply are not survivable; however, wearing a seatbelt properly will greatly reduce your chances of being killed or seriously injured in a crash. Not wearing a seatbelt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes.

Troop E Troopers have investigated 40 fatal crashes for the year of 2008, resulting in 44 fatalities. Six of the 40 fatal crashes have involved pedestrians. Five fatal crashes have involved an ATV and two have involved a motorcycle. Twenty-two of the 27 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Six fatal victims were restrained.
