Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: November 11, 2008 Fatal Crash In Winn Parish On Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at 3:55 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a fatal crash involving two vehicles. The crash occurred on US Hwy 84, milepost 112.2, in Winn Parish. The crash involved a 2005 Toyota pickup, driven by Ms. Kristy M. Martin (W/F 39 yrs) of Winnfield, LA and a 2000 Chevrolet pickup, driven by Mr. Howard L. McCarty (W/M 54 yrs) of Tullos, LA. The Toyota was west bound on US Hwy 84 when Ms. Martin lost control of her vehicle and crossed the centerline. This action placed her vehicle in the direct path of the Chevrolet, which was east bound on US Hwy 84. The Chevrolet then collided with the Toyota broadside. At the time of the collision, the roadway was wet and weather conditions were classified as heavy rain. Ms. Martin was pronounced dead and she was not wearing her seatbelt. Mr. McCarty suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Hardtner Medical Center and later transferred to Rapides Regional Medical Center. Mr. McCarty was not wearing his seatbelt. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Winn Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of death. Troop E Troopers have investigated 54 fatal crashes for the year of 2008, resulting in 61 fatalities. Nine of the 54 fatal crashes have involved pedestrians. Five fatal crashes have involved an ATV and five have involved a motorcycle. Twenty-eight of the 35 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Nine fatal victims were restrained.
