Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: January 26, 2009 Crash In Avoyelles Parish Claims A Life Last night a Marksville man was killed when the vehicle he was riding in crashed. Troopers from Troop E responded to the fatal crash around 8:45 pm, which occurred on LA Hwy 107 around the Cocoville area. The crash involved a 2000 Pontiac Firebird, driven by Steven A. Augustine (B/M 39 yrs) of Marksville, LA. Initially, the Pontiac was north bound on LA Hwy 107 when Augustine lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. The vehicle then began to rotate counterclockwise, reentered the roadway, and then exited the left side of the roadway. After exiting the left side of the roadway, the vehicle entered a ditch and collided with a culvert. Steven A. Augustine received minor injuries and was transported to Avoyelles Hospital. His only passenger who was also his brother, identified as Charles L. Augustine (44 yrs) of Marksville, LA, was pronounced dead. Both driver and passenger were not wearing their seatbelts. The driver was charged with Careless Operation. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Troop E Troopers have investigated five fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in six fatalities. Two of the four fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. One crash has involved a motorcycle.
