Excessive Speed And Lack Of Seatbelt Usage Factors In Sabine Parish Fatal Crash

Troop E Commander Captain Kenneth Moore announced today that after consulting with Zwolle Police Chief Marvin Frazier, State Police would be the investigating agency concerning the fatal crash that occurred earlier this week.

Late Monday, January 26, 2009, around 10:30 pm, Zwolle Police Department attempted to stop a 2007 Ford pickup for a hazardous traffic violation (speeding), which occurred on US Hwy 171. When the officer activated the police car’s emergency lights and siren, the driver refused to stop and fled from the officer. The driver, identified as Matthew Wayne McCoy (W/M 20 yrs) of Converse, LA, then exited US Hwy 171 onto Old Pleasant Hill Road as the pursuit continued. McCoy continued to operate his vehicle at a high rate of speed as he traveled over a hillcrest. He then lost control of the vehicle and exited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle overturned numerous times before coming to rest.

McCoy was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Troop E Troopers have investigated seven fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in eight fatalities. Three of the five fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. One crash has involved a motorcycle and one has involved a pedestrian.
