Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: February 9, 2009 Head On Crash Kills One And Injures Three A man from Deville was killed today when his vehicle collided with a family from Pineville. Troopers responded to the fatal crash around 8:30 am, which occurred on LA Hwy 28 East between Pineville and Holloway. The crash involved a 2001 Honda CRV, driven by Alton G. Croom (W/M 68 yrs) of Deville, LA and a 2005 Nissan Altima, driven by Rhonda B. Hickey (W/F 41 yrs) of Pineville, LA. The Honda was west bound when it crossed the centerline and collided with the east bound Nissan. After the collision, the Honda came to rest in the west bound lane and the Nissan came to rest in a ditch located on the south side of the roadway. All the occupants in the Nissan had to be extricated. Croom was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead. Hickey was wearing her seatbelt and sustained moderate injuries. Barbara Hickey (72 yrs) of Pineville and Edward Hickey (73 yrs) of Pineville were passengers in her vehicle. They also sustained moderate injuries and were wearing their seatbelts. All three were transported to Rapides Regional Hospital. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation. Troop E Troopers have investigated eight fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in nine fatalities. Four of the six fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. One crash has involved a motorcycle and one has involved a pedestrian.
