Seatbelt Enforcement Detail

Louisiana State Police Troop E has worked 58 fatal crashes to date, resulting in 66 fatalities. The number of unrestrained (not wearing a seatbelt) occupants killed for the year of 2008 is 31. Out of 38 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only), 31 occupants were not wearing their seatbelts. These figures equate to 81.6% of all passenger vehicle fatalities involved unrestrained occupants. That figure does not include the numerous amounts of severe injuries resulting from crashes where the occupant was not wearing a seatbelt. Not only are these figures unacceptable, they are also extremely disheartening.

Not wearing a seatbelt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes. We know that approximately 25% of all occupants do not wear their seatbelts, but did you know that unrestrained occupants make up 68% of killed occupants (figures based on LSU’s Highway Safety Research Group 2007 Traffic Records Data Report)?

On Saturday, November 29, 2008, between the hours of 7:00 am and 12:00 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop E conducted a seatbelt enforcement detail in Winn Parish. During the checkpoint, fifty-one motorists were cited for seatbelt citations and one child restraint citation was issued. Troopers also issued four non-moving citations.

Troop E will be conducting numerous checkpoints (i.e. seatbelt checkpoints, insurance checkpoints, and DWI checkpoints) throughout the year. Motorists should expect aggressive enforcement in these areas of interest.
