Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: November 29, 2008 Alcohol Suspected In Double Fatality On Saturday, November 29, 2008, at 2:33 am, Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a fatal crash involving one vehicle. The crash occurred on US Hwy 171, milepost 63.7, in Vernon Parish. This area is located south of New Llano, LA. The crash involved a 2001 Chevrolet pickup, driven by Ms. Donzie Lea Smith (W/F 29 yrs) of Leesville, LA. The Chevrolet was north bound on US Hwy 171 when Ms. Smith lost control and ran off the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the Chevrolet collided with a private driveway and began overturning. Ms. Smith was pronounced dead and alcohol usage is suspected. Routine toxicology tests are pending. She was wearing her seatbelt. Ms. Smith’s only passenger, identified as Mr. William Edward Orme (24 yrs) of Anacoco, LA, was also pronounced dead. He was ejected during the crash and was not wearing his seatbelt. Vernon Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of death. The crash remains under investigation. Troop E Troopers have investigated 58 fatal crashes for the year of 2008, resulting in 66 fatalities. Ten of the 58 fatal crashes have involved pedestrians. Five fatal crashes have involved an ATV and five have involved a motorcycle. Thirty-one of the 38 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Ten fatal victims were restrained.
