Pedestrian Killed In Early Morning Crash

On Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at 5:58 am, Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a fatal crash involving one vehicle and one pedestrian. The crash occurred on LA Hwy 1, milepost 245.0, in Avoyelles Parish. This location is south of LA Hwy 1195 and south of the Fifth Ward Community.

The crash involved a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix, driven by Mr. Mike W. Gunnels (W/M 58 yrs) of Marksville, LA and a pedestrian, identified as Mr. Willie Andrews (B/M 60 yrs) of Houston, TX. Prior to the crash, the Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Office had received a call of an intoxicated individual walking on LA Hwy 1. Upon the deputy’s arrival he observed the pedestrian (Mr. Andrews) and observed Mr. Andrews screaming and agitated. The deputy instructed Mr. Andrews to remain stationary, but he ignored the instructions and attempted to cross LA Hwy 1. Mr. Andrews then entered the lane of travel in which the Pontiac was traveling and was struck. Mr. Gunnels stated he did not observe Mr. Andrews until impact had occurred.

Mr. Andrews was wearing dark colored clothing and was pronounced dead by the Avoyelles Parish Coroner’s Office.

Mr. Gunnels was not injured.

Routine toxicology tests are pending.

Avoyelles Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of death.

The crash remains under investigation.

Troop E Troopers have investigated 61 fatal crashes for the year of 2008, resulting in 71 fatalities. Eleven of the 61 fatal crashes have involved pedestrians. Five fatal crashes have involved an ATV and five have involved a motorcycle. Thirty-three of the 40 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Ten fatal victims were restrained.
