Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: January 3, 2009 Crash Involving Four Vehicles Claims The Life Of A Young Man Troop E Troopers investigated their first fatal crash of 2009 today near the Dewey Wills Wildlife Management Area in LaSalle Parish. Troopers responded to the fatal crash at 10:46 am, which occurred on LA Hwy 28 East near the Diversion Canal. The crash involved a 2003 Chevrolet pickup, driven by Matthew S. Lowe (W/M 22 yrs) of Gonzales, LA, a 2005 Mack (18-wheeler), driven by Gerald Prudhomme (W/M 60 yrs) of Eunice, LA, a 1990 Mack (18-wheeler), driven by Patrick R. Fontenot (W/M 54 yrs) of Eunice, LA, and a 2000 Ford pickup which was parked off the roadway and unoccupied. The Chevrolet was east bound on LA Hwy 28 East when Lowe crossed the centerline and collided with the rear of Prudhomme’s vehicle, which was west bound. After this initial collision, Lowe’s vehicle rotated into the path of Fontenot’s vehicle, which was west bound. This action resulted in Fontenot’s vehicle impacting the driver’s side of Lowe’s vehicle. The Ford pickup only became involved in the crash because one of Lowe’s tires separated from his vehicle and collided with it. Lowe was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt. There were two juvenile (male 13 yrs & male 10 yrs) passengers in Lowe’s vehicle at the time of the crash. Both sustained serious injuries and were transported to Rapides General Hospital. Prudhomme was not injured, but Fontenot received minor injuries. He was transported to LaSalle General Hospital. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
