Edmonson, Superintendent News Release Date: August 9, 2008 Another Unrestrained Driver Dies In Sabine Parish Crash On Saturday, August 09, 2008, at 6:49 am, Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a fatal crash involving one vehicle. The crash occurred on US 171, milepost 86.2, in Sabine Parish. The crash involved a 2003 Dodge Dakota, driven by Mr. David W. Burke (W/M 38 yrs) of Leesville, LA. The Dodge was north bound on US 171 when Mr. Burke lost control and exited the right side of the roadway. He then overcorrected his vehicle and exited the left side of the roadway. After exiting the left side of the roadway, the Dodge collided with a large dirt mound and began to overturn several times. Mr. Burke was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from his vehicle. He was pronounced dead. Alcohol use is suspected to be a factor. Routine toxicology tests are pending. Sabine Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of death. The only passenger in the vehicle, Mr. Dwight A. Jones (25 yrs) of New Llano, LA, was wearing his seatbelt. He was not ejected and only sustained moderate injuries. He was transported to Byrd Medical Center for treatment. The crash remains under investigation. Troop E Troopers have investigated 37 fatal crashes for the year of 2008, resulting in 41 fatalities. Six of the 37 fatal crashes have involved pedestrians. Four fatal crashes have involved an ATV and two have involved a motorcycle. Twenty of the 25 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Six fatal victims were restrained.
