Fatal Crash In Sabine Parish Involves Four Vehicles

On Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at 11:51 am, Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a fatal crash involving four vehicles. The crash occurred on LA Hwy 6, milepost 26.4, in Sabine Parish. This location is west of the Sabine/Natchitoches Parish Line.

The crash involved a 2005 Ford Taurus, driven by Ms. Karen D. Brown (B/F 49 yrs) of Natchitoches, LA, a Freightliner (18 wheeler), driven by Mr. Brady C. Taylor (W/M 39 yrs) of Hephzibah, GA, a 2002 Honda Civic, driven by Mr. David R. Mulcahy (W/M 25 yrs) of Alexandria, LA, and a 1985 Ford LTD, driven by Mr. Larry J. Garner (B/M 53 yrs) of Florien, LA. The Ford Taurus was west bound on LA Hwy 6 when it crossed the double yellow no passing lines and collided with the east bound Freightliner’s rear tires. After this initial collision, the Ford Taurus came to rest partially in the west bound ditch and partially in the west bound lane of LA Hwy 6. The Freightliner then overturned and came to rest across both lanes of LA Hwy 6. Both the Honda Civic and the Ford LTD were west bound (LA Hwy 6) and took evasive action in an attempt to avoid this collision. Both of these vehicles collided with debris, from the initial impact between the Ford Taurus and the Freightliner, and traveled off the right side of the roadway.

Ms. Brown was pronounced dead at the scene. There were two juvenile passengers (B/F 9yrs & B/M 13 yrs) in Ms. Brown’s vehicle at the time of the collision. Both juvenile passengers sustained moderate injuries and were transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport.

Mr. Taylor sustained minor injuries and was transported to Natchitoches Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Mulcahy did not sustain any injuries.

Mr. Garner did not sustain any injuries. Ms. Janice Garner (41 yrs) of Florien, LA was a passenger in Mr. Garner’s vehicle. She sustained minor injuries and was transported to Natchitoches Regional Medical Center.

Routine toxicology tests are pending.

Sabine Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of death.

Troop E Troopers have investigated a total of 13 fatal crashes for the year of 2008, resulting in 13 fatalities. Two of the 13 fatalities have involved pedestrians. Eight of the 11 fatal crashes (vehicle only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Seatbelt use is unknown in one fatal crash. Two fatal victims were restrained.
