“Kids Health Fest 2008”

The Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office (Project D.A.R.E) will sponsor a “Kids Health Fest” on May 10, 2008 at the Northwestern State University track and field area. This event is open to all children.

A Fun Run will begin at 9:00 am with on site registration beginning at 8:00 am.

Local professionals will offer free health screenings for kids. Kids will have an opportunity to visit with Local Pals. Appearances by Daren the Lion, McGruff the Crime dog, Buckles with Louisiana State Police, Sparky the Fire Safety Dog, Monty the Owl and King Louie the Lion.

Events include health treats, games, inflatable jumps, kids give back race, bike raffles, professional face painting and pictures for Mother’s Day gifts. The Natchitoches Sheriff’s Office will offer finger printing for kids.

Some special attractions are: Louisiana State Police Rollover Simulator promoting buckle up safety and a bicycle safety presentation where kids can participate and be fitted for a free bicycle helmet. The Rollover Simulator provides a visual example of what happens to an individual who chooses to not wear a seat belt and is involved in a rollover crash. Through this demonstration, parents and children can learn the benefit of using a seat belt. Jelly the Clown will also make a special appearance and presentation.

Studies show that up to 85% of serious head injuries sustained in bike crashes could have been prevented by the proper wearing of a bicycle helmet. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development Safe Routes to School Program are funding the Louisiana State Police to provide this training to our school age children (ages 5 to 14). This partnership will allow us to distribute 9,000 bicycle helmets statewide and the associated educational materials to go with it. The overall objective of the program is to educate children in the safe way to ride their bikes to school.

This is a great opportunity for you and your child/children to engage in various activities as a family. Children look to adults, especially parents, as role models. We, as a community, must begin educating children at an early age about the importance of health and safety issues. What a great way to get involved with your child!
